On November 25, 2024, many CHEER parents and students were invited to the Casa de Vida Family Shelter in Chatsworth to build and install four garden beds for the housed families to use to grow vegetables. After they had built all of the garden beds, chicken wire was laid under the beds to prevent gophers and other rodents from eating the plants. The rest helped even out the ground using pickaxes and shovels to loosen the dirt and pack it into a smooth floor.
After laying the chicken wire down, they set the metal garden beds on top and dumped thirteen bags of soil to fill one of them up. While volunteering there, they said hi to a few of the residents of the family shelter! Overall, I'm glad it was an enjoyable and hands-on volunteering experience that could help underprivileged families!
